The story has been misrepresented as you pointed out. The water source didn't 'contain' more lead and the water as it left the utility was perfectly fine. The problem is the aging distribution system and more specifically that part of the system that the utility is not responsible for. The utility owns the system up to the water meter and after that the homeowner owns it. Most of this problem occurs in the part of the system that the homeowner owns and maintains. <br /><br />It is likely that every large city in the Midwest will show similar problems probably not as severe but bad enough to make headlines if they were all checked carefully. Part of the problem is the aging systems and part is the lack of large amounts of decent water supplies to tap. Most eastern and mid-Western cities use ground water, rivers and lakes and very little of this water in these long heavily populated areas are 'pristine'.
