I think only hard math can claim an exception. They assume two or three small assumptions and derive everything from there. (It has been 45 years since I took that class. "Rusty" is an understatement!) <br />SiGraybeardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00280583031339062059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-26325978307037066122017-11-27T16:42:25.259-05:002017-11-27T16:42:25.259-05:00"If nothing else, the amount of 14C coming fr..."If nothing else, the amount of 14C coming from thunderstorms could be higher in the tropics and lower near the poles, giving different ratios of the two isotopes that are dependent on latitude and not age."<br /><br />Carbon-14 age dating has always seemed to be based on a giant assumption to me.Arthurhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09289639279717534292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-31444070097453446052017-11-26T12:25:02.424-05:002017-11-26T12:25:02.424-05:00The free path length of the electrons and ions in ...The free path length of the electrons and ions in arc welding (stick) are short, and the voltage differential is probably in the 20 -80 volt range. It would be hard to accelerate any particles to high enough speeds ( measured in electron volt gradient) to make anything above ultraviolet. I speculate the lightening does it by somehow accelerating electrons or ions through a miles long voltage differential in the rarified regions of the atmosphere. Has to make me wonder, why would not the same thing happen during Arc welding, and would the gamma radiation exposure be enough to pose an additional hazard to the welder?
