The sand on the southern shore (Indiana Dunes, and Illinois Nat'l Lakeshore area) must be the kind that compacts and locks together.zukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09170254834612495111noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-89900274530563663412017-05-28T02:27:19.140-04:002017-05-28T02:27:19.140-04:00I'm totally surprised that they can build thos...I'm totally surprised that they can build those tall and massive structures without digging down to bedrock for support. After seeing four and five story hotels and other buildings shifted and damaged on the Gulf Coast after hurricanes (let alone by earthquakes on the West Coast), it amazes me that anything can be built on sand, let alone the buildings in Dubai, even with a solid foundation.Reg Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14099612693763932005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-66447917919314388972017-05-27T21:26:49.775-04:002017-05-27T21:26:49.775-04:00I'm looking at a novelty gift from the United ...I'm looking at a novelty gift from the United Arab Emirates, right at the moment. It's panes of glass, stacked with sand in between each pane, in a picture frame. It has sand from each of the 7 Emirates, and they are all strikingly different. (It's pretty neat, you tilt it and all the different sands flow at different rates, making what looks like a series of dunes receding into the distance.)

https://www.google.com/search?q=uae+sand+picture+frame+gift&tbm=isch&imgil=8xOlBIMMEFPESM%253A%253Bqxfg6X4VH3orkM%253Bhttps%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.etsy.com%25252Flisting%25252F98706926%25252Fcamels-and-seven-colors-of-sand-moving&source=iu&pf=m&fir=8xOlBIMMEFPESM%253A%252Cqxfg6X4VH3orkM%252C_&usg=__HW0164iSaJ6lasZKbYaFAY7v3C0%3D&biw=1455&bih=757&ved=0ahUKEwit0bGSt5HUAhXBdSYKHWS5D3cQyjcIwwE&ei=CycqWe2fM8HrmQHk8r64Bw#imgrc=8xOlBIMMEFPESM:

Sorry for the giant link, but as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words....

nAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-2349251399888283152017-05-27T16:41:12.551-04:002017-05-27T16:41:12.551-04:00I was surprised that the sand around Dubai was con...I was surprised that the sand around Dubai was considered useless for building those islands off the coast and making the foundations for the huge buildings. They pumped sand off the floor of the Persian Gulf.

I'd figure if you needed sand, where else do you wanna go? I guess the grains get too rounded. Or something. The rising sea levels are covering the prime sand resources that are needed for building new homes for displaced polar bears and Arctic terns. The Bedouin of the Sahara have over 300 words for sand, and may soon overtake the Saudi Arabians in wealth, now that the U.N. has started selling silicon dioxide credits on the various commodity markets, worldwide.

It's a little known fact that Al Gore invented silicon dioxide in order to develop the silicone used by cosmetic surgeons to perform increase-mammoplasty surgery. He needed the patented silicone implants for the tactile stimulation that strengthens his chakras.Reg Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14099612693763932005noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-29026442369814856552017-05-26T19:43:39.686-04:002017-05-26T19:43:39.686-04:00A very gritty topic.A very gritty topic.doubletroublehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04378163493817522427noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-13496838716340981232017-05-26T16:26:24.394-04:002017-05-26T16:26:24.394-04:00I had a discussion of sand with my general contrac...I had a discussion of sand with my general contractor on a home I'm building in AZ. Suffice to say some fill is necessary because the home is going in on a slope and the property is bedrock with some dirt (and pines) on it. It led to a discussion of the granite sand he is using for the fill because it locks up and its compaction characteristics are superior. He did most of the talking - but we must have chatted for twenty minutes on the comparative value of different sands for this application.LLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05538854359365988863noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-32102507538699046002017-05-26T14:04:19.836-04:002017-05-26T14:04:19.836-04:00They mention the use of sand in fracking in the or...They mention the use of sand in fracking in the original article, but not sources.
SiGraybeardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00280583031339062059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-25773030544836173782017-05-26T13:59:03.010-04:002017-05-26T13:59:03.010-04:00There's also the sand they use for fracking. ...There's also the sand they use for fracking.
