But the purist in me says that if it's supposed to be a boat race, they should be racing in the water. Boats go in the water. Not just occasionally in the water or only four square feet of the hull is in the water.

SiGraybeardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00280583031339062059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-26763136334984224232017-08-05T19:18:43.973-04:002017-08-05T19:18:43.973-04:00There's a purist in me that thinks that since ...There's a purist in me that thinks that since it's supposed to be a yacht race that the boats should at least have a cabin.

Never mind a real yacht has a bar. The power plant was two boilers for each of the two main engines.
We could go about 25 knots on two boilers without lighting off the superheat side of the boilers, but to get to around 33 knots meant all four boilers with max superheat. As SiG stated, as long as the hull is pushing through the water it takes a huge amount of power increase to gain speed.
Years ago my wife and I drove up to Newport Rhode Island on a whim and ended up being in Newport to see the United States lose the America's Cup to the Australians.
I hadn't realized just how much the technology of sailboat racing had changed.
John in Phillyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16196033252818387245noreply@blogger.com
