Trial time.
The template I was using was called "Picture Window" and no matter what I did, I got lines of background picture in the right panel. I tried a bunch of things, and had no luck getting rid of it. Switching over to "Travel" got rid of it, and other than forcing some color changes, the page works much better to me.
I also made it wider. While I have a wide screen monitor here, I tried to keep it good for 1024 x 768 monitors. That makes the text area wider.
Because where I live is about as flat as a pool table, mountains appeal to me. The tropical beach pictures with palm trees and all that are about as un-exotic as a strip mall; to those of you in the frozen north, I imagine you'd have the opposite feeling.
Much better I think? Looks kinda like new age cutting edgey thing of craps thing, I am an old fart like you and like simple, unadorned workable pictures, that is why I miss Windows 3.1, ya couldn't get too graphic with limited RAM and processor. I could get used to this,I have had to all my life, "Embrace the Suck" is my motto...
ReplyDeleteI like the new look too. It looks mostly flat gray with just a hint of mountains and a river. Is that what it's supposed to look like? I'm using Firefox 20.somethingerother and sometimes Firefox renders things oddly.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, love the blog in general. I too have been pushing transistors around for a long time although I wouldn't call myself a graybeard yet. Gray hair, however, is certainly trending up. I'm sure our workshops look very similar!
Thanks, y'all!
ReplyDeleteAnd don't stay strangers.
What's weird is it looks different on my wife's computer right next to mine.

ReplyDeleteLooks good to me. I'm not sure how it would look on an 8088 or an 8086 though. lol I just moved from where you could see tomorrow coming to where at least there are some bluffs around. But it's still not my beloved mountains. Love your blog keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteps. Had a major typo in my other comment. Darn tri-focals!
Looking good!
ReplyDeleteWhere's the Indian? There's supposed to be an Indian.
ReplyDeleteI actually started out looking for one of those charts with the Indian. I got distracted by this one for the purty colors.
DeleteWhite text on a dark background is universally painful to a rather large segment.
ReplyDeleteYou may remember all the stories of headaches from the IBM white on blue?
The current schema is like that.
I'm open to suggestions. What works better?
DeleteI had a gray, but that seemed too low contrast to me.
I have to respectfully disagree with the comment about white text on black background comment. Walk around any SW or ASIC development area and you'll see Vim/Emacs with black backgrounds and white text. the reason is, when you spend your entire day looking at a monitor, the less energy directed at your eyeballs the better. White background, whilst looking like paper, actually directs a large amount of generally useless energy at your eyes, to relieve the strain, the reverse polarity was invented. I think the white text on black background looks good... but then, I'm used to that. :-)
DeleteComme ci comme ça.
DeleteI'm here for the content, not the decoration. That said, this seems a bit more uncomfortable than whatever it was before, though I couldn't describe what it was before. Of course I frequently can't remember what clothes I own, either. ;-)
Anon- if it doesn't hurt your eyes then it's theoretical and won't bug you. If it does hurt your eyes, then it's inescapable. LIke as not the people working computers for a living don't have the problem and the people with the problem sought a career that didn't hurt so much. =)
ReplyDeleteThe problem is real and it's not an insignificant segment. It's sad to see great content go to "I can't read this without a splitting headache and seeing the negative image for ten minutes after looking away."
