Or, at least, the history of technology. Someone develops something for an envisioned use and the immediate question is "what else can we use that for?"

VCRs were developed for recording TV shows and selling movies, then became the world's biggest porn industry. After porn, using them for property monitoring was probably next.

SiGraybeardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00280583031339062059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-74471990926131548152019-06-13T13:34:10.662-04:002019-06-13T13:34:10.662-04:00While the robotics sloth is an interesting idea an...While the robotics sloth is an interesting idea and could bring new insights into the ecology where they are deployed the future as yet unknown uses for such tech is where the real questions arise. I suspect such tech when mature will be useful to .Mil, to cartels and other entities for surveillance and if armed area denial actions. Such a device with a claymore type weapon hidden in the foliage could be an asset or a problem depending on which side you were part of.Dannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-82857028742363222062019-06-13T09:57:34.238-04:002019-06-13T09:57:34.238-04:00One note on energy use: The article assumes that a...One note on energy use: The article assumes that aircraft use lots of energy - while that is often true, it is not always true.
Most people when they think of unmanned aircraft think of quadcopters or similar devices; these are the least energy efficient aircraft. A fixed wing aircraft, or better yet a lighter than air vehicle (or a combination of both) are much, much more efficient and there are fixed wing aircraft with small engines or solar panels that can now stay aloft for weeks, so they shouldn't necessarily be ruled out. Of course, in this case I do agree that a non-aircraft is a better way to see in, under, and around trees.Jonathan Hhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10476185257203343474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-25692930607554064772019-06-12T23:52:11.483-04:002019-06-12T23:52:11.483-04:00A human cultural mythology/storytelling name for a...A human cultural mythology/storytelling name for a person who constructs autonomous listening/reporting devices is "wizard". A human cultural name for making a geographic region a trap, full of listening and acting devices, where the volume is hostile both under the walking surface and above the walkers' heads, is "enchanted forest". Owls are the Ferraris of observing devices, but how many more SlothBots can you print today for the cost of one robot owl?

Appalachian mountain country is full of stories about how the parasitic busybodies and thieves named "revenuers" didn't come back down the mountain. Those stories were told many decades before drones with pistols were demonstrated on youtube. Tell me again how tax collection has a bright future, when it has to collect through an enchanted forest where there are many eyes upon you?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
