It's amazing what one can see if one is even 5 miles up looking at a location far away.

Distance also equals electronic security. Helps to hide launch telemetry from being picked up by prying eyes.

And... it's easy to hide failures and mess-ups. So what if said incidents drops a highy-toxic container on top of a school as long as the Japanese, Russians, Americans and everyone else don't see the failures.Beanshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15293778848879361153noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-72837268692652469752020-09-15T09:01:39.010-04:002020-09-15T09:01:39.010-04:00If you smell either an overpoweringly intense ammo...If you smell either an overpoweringly intense ammonia sort of smell (hydrazine or N2O4) or rotten-fish (one of the two, or possibly RFNA), retreat and go to the hospital immediately, because you're probably going to have lung problems (pulmonory edema - fluid in the lungs)

MadRocketSciAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-70097227790674421002020-09-15T08:52:38.299-04:002020-09-15T08:52:38.299-04:00China seems to have a lot of perfectly useable eas...China seems to have a lot of perfectly useable eastward facing coastline. I wonder why they launch from deep in their interior across their country? Russia does it because Kazhakstan is the best launch zone they really have.

Russia also uses hypergols in their booster stages. We use hypergols (N2O4, hydrazine) for in space propulsion only. Reaction control systems sort of need them because you can't tolerate ignition delays if you're trying to control your orientation. The space shuttle, apollo, and orion in-space propulsion use them because they have to sit in a tank at ~room temperature for weeks. (You would need some sort of cryo-cooler system to keep LOX cold if you wanted to use LOX/kerosene for in-space propulsion.) Also because NASA doesn't want to risk an ignitor failing in deep space.

AFAICT, the Russians use it in their boosters because they use it in their ballistic missiles and their climate is too cold for solid propellant to be reliable - cracking and embrittlement of the rubber binder. May also do something to kerosene.

IMO, we'll need to be able to store cryogenic propellants in space long term eventually if we're serious about a Mars mission, so it's something we should probably try to develop.

MadRocketSciAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1592992209402300549.post-53974350742927296792020-09-15T07:50:32.459-04:002020-09-15T07:50:32.459-04:00The number one mission of the PLA is the preservat...The number one mission of the PLA is the preservation of the party...not the nation.
