Video of the Day

I have two words for these "crazy kids":  Batshit.  Crazy.

No English is spoken in this, but there are English subtitles.

Question: do you think you could walk down the street in the US carrying something like this, dressed like they are, and not get stopped?

  1. Will you please turn that down or shall I silence it for you?

  2. The tine foil hats were a nice (appropriate) touch.

  3. Looks like a couple of cavity magnetrons bolted to that...that cone would do a good job of focusing the microwaves. They could do some serious damage with that rig.

Well, in some neighborhoods they'd fit right in.....

  5. I wonder if dressed like they are, and carrying an EMP gun that looks like a weapon one would drag out of a clown car, it is much more unlikely that they would be stopped. If they were wearing camo and carrying a flat black colored EMP gun I would think they would get stopped very quickly. Kind of hiding in plain sight.

If only we had someone handy who knows electromagnetic radiation and could run the numbers to find out if the gun is feasible.

    1. Oh, it's feasible. Like I said, what they did is crazy, but it can work.

As Dan pointed out, those are three magnetrons from microwave ovens. Those vary in power, but a thousand watts each is not out of the question. How well they did the combiner and feed could lead to some loss of power, but combining three 1 kW outputs can give you (wait for it) three kW. If they were low end microwave ovens they're still probably 500 Watts each, giving 1500 W.

The cone, called a horn antenna, acts to restrict radiation into a narrow beam in one direction. It doesn't increase the power, but compared to an omnidirectional antenna, it forces the power that would go in any other directions to just go in the direction it's pointed.

  6. I helped a friend of mine build one. We put two 1500W magnetrons on a magic-tee, bolted it to a section of waveguide, and then put a standard gain horn on the end.

We weren't sure what to expect from it, but it wasn't quite the "Death Ray" that most people would expect.

We could boil water a few feet away, and cook a hot dog at a couple of yards (as long as it was turned on long enough), but it sure scary as all get out!

    1. I think "boil water a few feet away" is plenty scary.

    1. Nope. That video is all the information I have.
