Word is breaking this afternoon/evening East Coast time that the world has lost Sir Patrick Stewart. Sir Patrick was 86.
While perhaps being best known as Captain Jean Luc Picard in "Star Trek, the Next Generation", or perhaps as "Professor X", Charles Xavier in the Marvel X-Men movies, he was in many important roles over his years in the industry.
Zendo Deb at 357 Magnum posted what I'm posting as flat image (.png) file but hers is a live link to X - best if you have an account. (That text on the right of his photo does enlarge if you click on it and is readable.)
To her point, we sure seem to be losing a lot of a generation of actors these days. It was less than a week ago that we lost Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Chekov in the original (late 1960s) Star Trek series.

Elke Sommer passed today.
ReplyDeleteI saw that, too. I went to her list of films on IMDB and came to the realization I knew next to nothing about her. I knew her name and remembered what she looked like back in the mid-'60s, but couldn't remember seeing a single movie.
DeleteSiG - I wonder if part of the noticeability of the loss is that the folks that are leaving now had years and years of appearances or were extremely well known characters.
ReplyDeleteIt is odd to see the generation of Star Trek I knew almost gone. I cannot think of a show during my formative years beyond that where I would instantly know (and generally mourn) the passing of the actors and actresses. As the years accelerate, the more well known series - Star Trek TNG, Harry Potter, The Lord of The Rings, Marvel Phases 1-3 - will be much of the same.
Oh, of course. There has also been a noticeable number of much younger performers checking out as well, but I think it's human nature to recognize the ones we've seen and been affected by the most. Part of that has to be associated with the longer we've seen them on screen, or the longer we've both lived.
