Over the river and through the woods... Wait. Scratch that
Over the river and up the road ... is how I get to Patrick Space Force Base. Which was known as Patrick Air Force Base up until the US Space Force was started in December, 2019.
Patrick is built on what we call the barrier island, a relatively narrow strip of (mostly) sand that runs parallel to the mainland of Florida. The best known road over most of its length is US Highway A1A and for a couple of miles, Patrick Space Force Base is separated from a narrow strip of Atlantic beach by A1A.
Just over two miles north of where the last causeway south of Patrick SFB meets A1A, on that strip of beach is a little place called Hangar's Beach, named for the large number of aircraft hangars across the street from that beach. Sometime in the history of Patrick Air Force Base, someone created a sign for that beach, showing its association with the US Air Force. It's on the left in the photo that follows. Sometime recently, someone else created a sign that reflected it was now a beach associated with the US Space Force, and it's on the right in the photo that follows.
This photo started out as two pictures forwarded by a friend that I combined into one side by side montage.
Hangars Beach, as I mentioned, was named after the large number of aircraft hangars on the air force base. Hangers Beach must be named after a large number of clothes hangers somewhere.
Spelling is important. But at least it's not as bad as this one:
It's actually... Hangars' Beach. Or was in 1973 when the family was in temporary base housing while dad was outprocessed and we were looking for more long-term temp quarters.
ReplyDeleteWhy? (the spelling and punctuation) Because the plural of Hangar is Hangars, thus plural possessive.
And the Hangars in question are/were still there last time I saw. And last time I checked gaggle erf maps.
Unless the Space Force has been demolishing things lately, I pretty much think the multiple hangars are still there.
Well, unless it is named after the singular hangar that is close to A1A that also has the control tower attached, so, then, well, "Hangar's" would be appropriate.
Mahaps you should contact the base PIO or the base commander and ask, perhaps, why the change in the name?
I wonder if they have a retinal thermometer?

DeleteIt says with every eye test. I've had eye tests a lot of times in my life. Nobody ever shoved a camera up my ass after an eye exam.
True story: My wife worked at what was then called Falcon Air Force Station near Colorado Springs. There were classified facilities that had extreme security measures, including weight checks and retinal scans. She was briefed in with a group including an Air Force officer. After the briefing the officer was rather disturbed because it seemed "unsanitary." After a short discussion with the briefer it became obvious that the officer thought it was a rectal scan.
ReplyDeleteOh yes - the retinal scan often detected women were pregnant before they were aware. And the weight checks (walking dressed through a hallway with no books or bags) were extremely unpopular.
