It was a busy day that got the better of me. It didn't help that something I was hoping would happen showed up much later than would have been convenient. I promise I'll get to that story.
On these days that get away from me, I usually try to put up something light. Funny is even better. This idea has been cooking on the back burner in my brain - the background processor - for a few days. Nowadays, the "serious weightlifter" guys use these things called kettlebells instead of hand weights or what we used to call dumbbells.
The idea of using copied web pages from two big online stores seemed like a natural, so you know I'm not making this up.
Yeah, you can go 'full pro lifter' or do a Stallone (referring to his Rocky movies where he lifts wood, beats up cow corpses, chops wood, stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite weight lifting tool is a sledgehammer. About 10lbs. Hold your hand on the shaft next to the weight (weight on 'south side' of palm, shaft on thumb side of palm) and now do all your curls and arm motions. And now do all your sword strike and block movements. Seriously works, go slow and go through all the range of motions that your wrists, elbows and shoulders allow.
Now reverse, and move your hand down the shaft a couple inches with the weight and do the same thing.
Ha! And the aptly-named Dicks will never get another dollar of mine . . .
ReplyDeleteTo Beans' point, sledgehammers are great tools. Another great and pretty reasonable alternative are club weights, which give one the same weight as a sword (even tip heavy) but are around 14" long. Great for practicing cuts without taking out your ceiling.
ReplyDeleteI'd never heard the term club weights, and a quick search shoes a couple of different things. One kind is shaped like doughnuts and seem to be for putting on a golf club while the other are shaped more like bowling pins. Or maybe like something you'd club someone with.
DeleteI'm guessing the second ones? Got a link to a picture?
Sure SiG!

You may also see them referred to as maces. Some Indian forms use them as training tools. I have two 5 lbs and one 10 lbs; the 10 lbs is much hard train with than one might think.
Ah ha! The second kind. Interesting idea. In both cases, this and the sledge hammer, the torque from the weight being farther from your hand is going to change the amount of work you do.
DeleteIn our particular sword school, the weight tends towards the sword tip, so this makes an excellent training tool.
DeleteThe cat litter is a nice touch, although I could just try using our cats as Cat`tleBells... it would be a much more "dynamic" workout that way... LOL
ReplyDeleteFor best results trim the cat's claws BEFORE exercising.
DeleteHave plenty of Mercurochrome handy just in case.
