Time Out

Much like Peter at Bayou Renaissance Man posted on Tuesday, I'm having to pull a temporary break in blogging.

Long time readers might remember that a couple times I've mentioned I have a hernia that needs to be fixed.  As many have said, they don't get better on their own.  The last time I mentioned it, I said that it might be getting fixed "real soon now."

The surgery will be first thing tomorrow morning - I'm supposed to be there by 6:15 EDT.  I don't know that it's possible for me to know how long I'll be lying around before I get over it.  I have a routine 2 week followup appointment with the surgeon's office (that's actually 13 days and not 14) but should be up and around the house pretty quickly.  It's just that sometimes it takes a little longer.

I also wrote a couple of days ago that this weekend is my favorite operating event on ham radio these days.   I should at least be able to post an update before Saturday afternoon.

Now, if you'll pardon me, I have to be up early tomorrow.   Until next time, this is running through my head, but I have to make you go to YouTube to watch and hear it.

  2. Just remember that the heaviest thing you pick up for a couple of months is a fork or a spoon. A friend violated that rule after hernia surgery and guess what. Has a hernia again. Best wishes.

  3. Prayers sent, SiG. Hope your recovery is boring.....that's better than "911"!

  4. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. My hernia surgery was done robotically through three small cuts in my abdomen. I hope that is how they do yours instead of making one big cut. Recovery was very quick.

  5. Best Wishes and hopes for no surprises.
Boring is good when the OR is involved, even for outpatient stuff.

  6. Prayers for today, and maybe have someone tell you a few jokes later. You'll appreciate laughing tomorrow when the meds wear off ;-) (seriously...don't expect laughing or, honestly, even breathing to feel great for a week +) And, DO NOT LIFT ANYTHING HEAVIER THAN A COFFEE CUP (shot glass is fine)
Had 2 done at the same time, open incision since the kidney donation laparoscopic (and subsequent 4" incision under my waistband to get it out) didn't let them do laparoscopic again under 7yrs (their words). Dr. said 'are you sure? Bilateral sucks. You're going to hate me in the morning. Doc...I'm not sure I like you now!) It took me a full week to be able to roll out of bed without someone helping me. There was no 'easy chair' sleeping, since it was just as painful. With a scar from one hip bone to the other, I kinda looked like a PEZ dispenser. They meshed both sides, and it took years for the mesh to not feel like I just got stabbed when I turned just right.

  11. All the best. I have known several people who have had to have that done, and it all turned out well for them. Recovery was always slower than predicted, so don't be disheartened if that happens.

  13. Ive had 3 inguinal hernia repairs over the decades. Back when they used chain saws and stays in the hospital were routine. Now a stomach and umbilical oned are nagging me. So may God watch over you with no complications. And there is a shortage of Morphene at this time, at least for RX dispensing. But thats for another day.

    1. I had a stomach (hiatal) hernia repaired in early 2023. Cured a practically lifelong addiction to antacids and literally changed my life. It also seemed to have cured what was always called asthma and got me out of seeing an allergist regularly. After seeing him another two years and just visiting to play, "so... how have you been?" with him, he discharged me.

  14. I see that in my post, I forgot to say that the surgery was for an umbilical hernia.

While we were at the hospital's check-in desk by 6:15, the last visit raised its ugly head again - that was the day they implemented all the new software. They never changed the my record to show that I had been discharged so they couldn't do anything for me. It took over an hour to change that.

The surgeon's PA had told me "you're going to feel like you did 10 rounds with Mike Tyson" and she was right. Laughing hurts. A tiny little chuckle hurts. Getting in and out of every place to sit in the whole house hurts.

Of course, that's expected. I'm going to assume the third day will be the worst because it's that way for so many things.
