Drones Over New Jersey?

It's almost hard to avoid the story about drones being reported in New Jersey and other states.  All except for the time required to read and try to extract a real meaning out of the news coverage - that's pretty easy to avoid.  So a trip to a place that ought to be fairly reasonable in its coverage seemed to be in order. Not a local news outlet, or one of the big network names maybe a site more objective?

Unable to find one I thought would be ideal, I avoided the main media outlets and went to Forbes and "Mystery drones over New Jersey and nearby states"

What Exactly Do We Know About The Drones?

Almost nothing, New Jersey Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia said on X Wednesday. Fantasia’s post was a lengthy summary of a legislative meeting with the Department of Homeland Security about the mysterious sightings. She described the government’s investigation strategy, which includes a coordinated effort led by the FBI with state police, the Office of Homeland Security and the U.S. Coast Guard. She described the dozens of nightly sightings as “coordinated” operations of drones “up to 6 [feet] in diameter” flying for six to seven hours—distances of 15 miles—unrelated to “hobbyists” or the Department of Homeland Security, which “appear to avoid detection by traditional methods (e.g., helicopters, radio frequencies).” They also reportedly aren’t related to military operations, the Picatinny Arsenal said in a statement to NJ Advance Media on Nov. 24.

Dawn Fantasia's post on X is worth the time to read, but all of this ignores the reporting of these drones from New York, Oregon, as well as other states and even other countries, such as the UK and Germany

The FBI and DHS released a statement on Thursday saying the investigation has “no evidence at this time” of “malicious activity” in New Jersey or a “national security or public safety threat.” The statement adds they have not identified “a foreign nexus” for the drones and will continue the investigation. It also said many of the drone sightings have been “cases of mistaken identity,” confusing drones for lawful, identified aircraft.

There are reports of "large and loud" drones that are "the size of SUVs" as opposed to the small, hobbyist class of drones.  There are reports of groups of drones coming off the ocean into New Jersey - I've seen a report of 50 coming ashore together.  There are reports of drones "going dark" and turning off running lights at night, but the mere act of keeping the lights on "most of the time" at night seems like an attempt to avoid collisions.

I'm sure you've seen the congressman saying they're Iranian and coming from a ship at sea.  I find that hard to believe. To borrow a line from the Cold War, "they can't even make a decent clock radio," so how can we expect them to make something as complex as a remote controlled flying drone.

Besides, I notice that whomever is behind these drones, or whatever they are, they don't fly to areas full of southern, "good ole boys."  It would turn into a giant skeet shooting party.

  1. All you need is a Remington 870 and some 00 buck!

  2. All you need is a POV medium drone that has an IR camera and towing a gill net.

    1. Excellent link! Thanks. click here to go directly.

While the 3rd image from the bottom, a Tweet from Samuel Hammond seems to be a very solid explanation, the Babylon Bee's image capture is hard to dispute (next one down, 2nd from the bottom).

  5. Drones are the future in war and espionage. We need to create some small "hunter" drones that can be used in small numbers or massive numbers that would seek out and destroy any drones in the sky. Small enough so that every soldier could carry one and every military vehicle could carry 20-100 of them.

  6. Shotguns.
Depending on where you live, maybe no.
What goes up, must come down.
I don't know if anybody has researched loading airsoft BBs into a 3" magnum 12 gauge shotgun shell, but that might be a great choice for near to medium range anti-drone work. Some brands of airsoft BBs are biodegradable in case you want to take down drones and save the planet.
And I know it would have to be used in a manually operated shotgun.

I'm also sure that somebody with way more skills than I have could figure out a tracking device combined with a mount that would use laser "pointers" to remove the drones.

On the other hand, maybe one of those quad fifty mounts could be repurposed to use four airsoft M-249 machine guns.
This link goes to a seller of the Airsoft M-249s.

Maybe a generic fully automatic Nerf type gun could be powered up with a Nerf round that would trail a length of Kevlar thread.
The model for this is the actual rocket with a trailing wire cable that was tested for anti-air defense in WWII.

My local gun shop/range is still waiting for the shipment of "Phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range".

  7. if you know how to load your own (and you're somewhat handy), take some #3 buck, press some 2lb mono into each lead ball, stuff them into your favorite wad/cup, and set it over your favorite powder. lead carefully; you'll see that drone rotors just love to tango/(tangle) with monofilament

    1. Hence my recommendation of a gillnet underneath a drone that has IR POV capabilities. The drone can shut off its lights all it wants, the heat signature is still there...

    2. It's a lot easier to use a couple larger split-shot sinkers on the ends of a steel leader, same as for taking legs off geese on a frozen pond.

      Bolo-style.

  8. We are being technologically gaslighted. Its serious. They are about to do something which requires every one of our's critical attention drawn far away from what is planned. And that is all this BS is about. Its fake its false its gay. I myself be very carefully looking about at everything but. Something stinks. Somethings coming.

    1. A clue here is how the administration is trying to mess up everything that Trump has said he wants to do. It's hard to imagine the deep state is going to allow it to happen.

  9. I believe it is the Federal Government doing this. There is a strong movement in Government to ban UAVs of all kinds (drones, Radio control model aircraft) from the citizens of this country as a threat because they can be used as weapons. As "arms" these devices are protected under the 2nd Amendment. As tools or toys, UAVs should only have minor controls placed on them for safety purposes. The forces behind this are doing their fear mongering quit well and are probably some of the sources reporting the UAVs.

    1. I believe that at least half of the sightings are by people who could barely tell a helicopter from airplane, in full daylight not just at night, and wouldn't know a drone if one hit their head. With various military bases in all the places where the drones are being reported, it's almost the safest bet that the spots are either us testing new drones, so classified, or other countries looking at our bases to try to learn new things.

    2. I am in agreement with you on there being a portion of the sightings being airplanes and helicopters. Those seeing them are just trying to get their 15 Minutes.

  10. Thie is likely a combination of several things. Mistaken identity thinking small aircraft are drones. Commercial flights at a distance looking smaller than they are. And of course actual drones flying about. Unfortunately it's a virtual guarantee that hostile foreign powers including Iran, China and Russia are running real world tests with drones testing our systems in preparation for an asymmetrical attack on the US. Like it or not, believe it or not, the US IS at war with these countries. A quasi cold war that encompasses espionage, hacking and other atypical methods of war. And when these actors feel the time is right these probing actions will become kinetic attacks. Imagine a coordinated armed drone attack where China manages to destroy half of more of our UNPROTECTED fighter force openly parked and accessible on airfields everywhere. This is a serious threat and needs to be addressed by the Fed gov and military now.
