In the World of the High Tech Redneck, the Graybeard is the old guy who earned his gray by making all the mistakes, and tries to keep the young 'uns from repeating them. Silicon Graybeard is my term for an old hardware engineer; a circuit designer. The focus of this blog is on doing things, from radio to home machine shops and making all kinds of things, along with comments from a retired radio engineer, that run from tech, science or space news to economics; from firearms to world events.
You have got to realise that if the "powers that be" decided things by flipping a coin, they would make a good decision about half the time. But they don't.
Laid out like that, you can't blame mere incompetence - the effects wouldn't proceed as quickly - you have to put it down to malevolence. Pure and simple
I don't think the style was sensationalistic, I think the stuff they were talking about is shocking. This has been going on for a long time - at least a hundred years, it's just the pace has accelerated in the last 20. As Phil B said, it's too persistent to be mere stupidity.
The old saying of "never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity" has the side effect of making us discount malice when it's going on.
