On G.H.W. Bush

As is often the case, I find others have said what I've been thinking as well as I can.  I refer you to LL at Virtual Mirage, who put it this way:
George HW Bush was an unabashed globalist and in his own way, an elitist. He was not a conservative and he was clearly a big government guy. He also strapped himself to a Navy TBF and flew it against the Empire of Japan and was shot down, ditching in the ocean. I give him huge credit for his service and for putting himself in harm's way. It takes guts to go out and face down "the elephant". George had guts and guts is good.
His politics were not mine.
I can respect the man for what he did as a young man in WWII while still not wanting to see him leading in any public office.  Run a company? Fine.  No company can do as much damage as a government can.

I'll just echo the several voices who have wished him "fair winds and following seas".

  1. The Bush Legacy did not extent to President JEB!

We will have to accept that as "good enough"

    1. As a governor, Jeb was a competent administrator. The state pension plans are rated in the top few in the country, and there's simply no comparison between how well Jeb's Florida EMS handled annual hurricanes and how New Orleans handled Katrina.

But he was too much of a globalist, too. Too much of a country club/Kennebunkport guy.

    2. D'oh! EMS was supposed to say EOC (Emergency Operations Centers).

  2. There is much about Bush Sr. and the Bush clan to dislike. But he also did pretty well as a public servant. He was handed a shit sandwich by Saddam Hussein in 1990 and was able to put together a coalition that included many arab countries to deal with the problem.....and the problem was dealt with fairly well considering the real world. He was also at the helm when the Berlin wall fell and the USSR was falling apart. A VERY dangerous time politically when things could easily have turned very nasty in the USSR leading to civil war and even WWIII. So yes...he wasn't perfect. But he was a damn sight better than that milk toast peanut farmer and the Kenyan SCOAMF.

    1. What you say is the single most important thing to bear in mind. We never get perfect men - there are no perfect men and there are even fewer perfect politicians. All we can ever do is find the least awful one at the time and push as much as we can.

    2. Both Bushes loved the empire, and hated Americans.

  3. This candidate did not keep his campaign promises about no new taxes. An agent who does not follow your instructions needs to be fired or worse.

How did that joke go? The father was the former head of the secret police. One brother counted the votes which made the other brother president. If we heard this about Russia we would laugh.
